Summary: The draft work assignment for Essay One has two parts. Submit both parts to this assignment link: an edited draft with highlighted changes (you could use bold font instead of highlighted text if you prefer), and a completed revision checklist.
Part 1, edited draft with highlighted changes:
1. Using the advice given in the readings you read for Week One and Week Two (, ), particularly the information in , check your work in your rough draft of Essay One for common grammar, sentence structure, and usage mistakes.
2. Correct and edit your mistakes.
3. Check every quotation to make sure it is synthesized and integrated. If you don’t have any quotes, go find some. They are required in this essay.
4. Check to make sure your in-text citations for every quote and paraphrase are correct (in MLA style).
5. Highlight or bold all changes. Turn in this version (with highlighting or bold font) here for this assignment. Please remember to remove all highlighting or bold font in the version you upload for a final essay grade.
Part 2, revision checklist:
1. Complete the revision checklist, posted below in pdf and Word file format, for your essay draft. I am not grading you on how many items you cannot place a check beside. Just complete the form. What you do with this checklist in terms of using it as a tool to find and correct errors in your essay before you turn in the essay is up to you.
Essay One Assignment Directions:
1. First, pick some examples, from outside of the course, of good, bad, and/or beautiful writing. Yes, you can reuse any content you have written already for an assignment in this course.
Next, go back to your Writing Steps One assignment and get your definitions for good, bad, and beautiful writing.
2. Once you have your examples and definitions from #1 gathered, use them to write an essay that explains why/ how/ in what ways your examples reflect your definitions of good, bad, and/or beautiful writing. You need to use the regular structure for your essay: an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. So, while you can use parts of your writing steps assignment in this essay, you have to add a few things to transform it into a passing essay.
3. As with most essays, you will need to make an argument of evaluation. Your thesis () will need to reflect the argument. It is not enough just to say an example of writing is good, or bad, or beautiful, or somehow a combination of these three categories of judgment. You have to say and explain specifically why and how, too, and this is the main point of your essay.
4. You need to have direct quotations and use specific evidence from the examples you choose to support your claim about why an example of writing is good (and/or bad, and/or beautiful). You can write about only good, only bad, or only beautiful writing. You may write about two or all three types of writing instead if you prefer (good and bad, good and beautiful, bad and beautiful, etc.).
5. Your essay needs to be at least three full pages double-spaced for a “C” grade, and it needs to follow MLA style guidelines ().
Your essay file must be formatted either in pdf or Word file format.
6. You need to cite all examples of writing you choose to use in your essay in a Works Cited page you include at the end of your essay. This page does not count as one of the three required pages.
